Frequency capping

The Frequency Capping section in the assignment page allows you to set a limit on the number of times an ad will be served. In AdButler, you can set a limit per user, per day, or both.

Per user limit

This uses a cookie to determine how often a single user can view the assigned ad or ads within a set amount of days.

As an example, you have an ad with a user limit set to 3 views every 5 days.

If a user views the ad for the first time at 8am in their local time, a frequency cookie will be set to expire at 8am in their local time five days later. Once the user views the ad 3 times during this period the ad will not appear again until after 8am on the fifth day.

This could look like this:

  • January 1st at 8:00am - ad is eligible and served, cookie is placed
  • January 2nd at 4:00pm - ad is eligible and served
  • January 4th at 5:00pm - ad is eligible and served, frequency cap has been reached
  • January 4th at 5:30pm - ad is not eligible, cap has been hit
  • January 5th at 7:00am - ad is not eligible, cap has been hit
  • January 5th at 9:00am - ad is eligible and served, new cookie is placed
When both the number of views and the days are set to zero (0), no per user limit will be applied.

Daily limit

This limits the views or clicks that the assignment can receive per day.

If you set frequency caps in a campaign, those limits will be shared by ALL of the ads in the campaign. Depending on the number of ads in the campaign, this could significantly reduce the number of times that each ad will be served.
